Do you know that millions of girls are not able to go school?

There are many reasons why girls are prevented from going to school.

First, poverty. Boys are given more priority to study than girls if parents are poor and have no money to send all their children to school.  Girls are more of help at home than boys so girls are preferred to stay at home to take care of siblings and do household chores.

The second reason is the cultural and social beliefs, attitudes and practices of a certain place. In most countries, society is dominated by men and daughters are perceived to be less valuable once educated because they will likely follow what their father, brother or husband wants.

Third, the parents lose more income when the girl child goes to school because girls are expected to do more domestic work than boys. Sending a girl to school is oftentimes seen either as bringing no gain at all, or, worse, an actual waste of money or a big loss of family’s income.

Pregnancy and child marriage is also one reason why adolescent girls’ schooling are cut before they have completed secondary school.

School-based violence is also another reason why girls’ education are halted. Some schools fail to protect the basic rights of girls. Violence includes rape, sexual harassment, physical and psychological intimidation, teasing and threats. It may happen on the way to school or within the school, and is done by teachers, and fellow students.  This also causes an end to girls’ education.

In my opinion, these are some of the reasons why girls are deprived of education. What about you? Please do write in the comment section below.
